Wikipedia editors tried to suppress the murder of Iyna Zarutska in Charlotte, NC, by deleting the entire article and removing the name of the alleged striker, according to Free Press.

Zarutska, 23, in Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed to death on August 22, while driving on a train home from work in Charlotte. Police identified the suspect as Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, who has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2007. The attack was caught on the supervisory video recently released to the public.

“For persons who are not public persons – that is, individuals who are not covered by section public persons – editors must seriously consider not to include material – in any article – suggesting that the person has committed or accused of committing a crime unless a conviction has been secured for this crime,” Stater Wikipedia’s crime policy.

Wikipedia notes that it is not unusual for articles to face several deletion trials, although editors were typically six months between the nominations.

An editor argued that the case should only be mentioned briefly during a transit controversy and called it a “wrong place, wrong time” story that would normally only receive routine routine coverage.
