The 5-minute “Apple Pie” I do all fall long

Last month, while examining Apple dessert recipes, I came across Joy Bauer’s 5-minute Apple Pie and I was surprised that I hadn’t seen it before. The 14th time New York Times Bestselling author and Today shows Residential dietitian’s gift is to cook delicious food that also happens to be healthy.

So as I stumble over this quick Apple “Pie” recipe, I was more than fascinated. Every Joy recipe I’ve tried has been a hit, so I figured this one would be no different; She promised all the nice goodness of the dessert without some of the fuss.

A hectic weekday when my kids asked for dessert and I had about 15 minutes before bathing time, I decided to give it a shot. It turns out that joy has broken the code on an ultra-fast apple pie dessert and it requires only five common ingredients. It has now become my official “emergency” dessert.

How to make Joy Bauer’s 5-Minuts Apple Pai

The recipe starts with the dice of a large, non -spoken apple (it is easier to keep the skin and Provides more nutrients and fiber). Her version doesn’t specify Apple size but believe me you want more Apple. The pieces should be on the smaller side because they cook faster and more evenly in the microwave.

Throw the apple in a microwave-safe bowl with a tablespoon of brown sugar and a generous pinch of cinnamon. In a separate bowl, mix two teaspoons of cornstarch with a few tablespoons of cold water; This will give it the thick and glossy circular filling -like feeling. The cornstarch mixture is stirred into the spicy apples and microwaves for one minute.

About 60 seconds later, the apples are softened, cornstarch will become thicker and it will all taste like it has been baked for an hour. Finally, divide the apples into two bowls, crumble graham biscuits on top and serve immediately.

While Joy’s dessert doesn’t have the classic pastry I long for with pie, I couldn’t believe how close it got to the right thing. It is definitely good: warm and fragrant with sore apples and the subtle, dental structure of the uneven crumbled grahams. This recipe is autumn dessert perfection, made even better with a doll of homemade whipped or vanilla ice cream.

Tips to make Joy’s quick dessert

What I love most about this recipe is how forgiving and flexible it is. I have mostly done it with the gala apples we had kicked around. But I’ve also tried it with Honeycrisp, Granny Smith and Fuji Sort; They all keep their shape well, but offer different structures and taste.

Depending on the type of apple you use, you may need to cook it for a little longer to achieve tender pieces. Continue microwaves in steps in 30 seconds until they reach your preferred temperature.

Don’t stress if your graham biscuits look cluttered – a mixture of larger chunks and less crumbling makes the bowl more fun to eat. Larger pieces offer structural contrast, while the finer crumbs help to tie everything and distribute the taste under each bite.

I generally prefer that my fruit chips and pies are very pastry. But with these minier I love to let the apples take the center. The fruit is really the star, and outside this dessert they would be excellent swirled into yogurt, appeared on pancakes or spoon on hot oats.

The magic of Joy’s recipe goes beyond the fact that it is delicious; It’s undeniable. It is more that this dessert feels like a trick up the sleeve in the days I want something special but do not have the time or energy to pull it off. In about five minutes, I can whip an Apple Pie recipe by knowing it will taste like the right deal.
